Review by Monica Martinangelo
Amazingly that is what was running through my head as Bob muttered to
the crowd a remembrance of our beloved CBS Nightly news anchor: the
great Walter Cronkite. Through the crowd you could hear whispers,
"he's saying something!" ,"he's talking!" It
appeared to be a novelty. Dylan and the boys launched into Million
Miles. The set list was filled with what have become usual tour
standards: Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again, Spirit
On the Water, High Water For Charlie Patton, Highway 61, Summer Days
and the always sad tune of Nettie Moore. For an encore Dylan and his
cowboy band left the crowd with a stellar version of Like A Rolling
Stone; followed by a new soon to be classic romping bluesy, Jolene,
and tied it all up with a Doozy of All Along The Watch Tower. With a
new number one album "Together Through Life" Bob Dylan has
thrown some new ditties into his traveling trunk and hit the road
again! This leg of the Never Ending Tour being dubbed: "The Blood
Of The Land" provides some, funky blues, led by the well seasoned
master musician accompanied by a dedicated band that keeps a well
trained eye on their leader. Perhaps that is why Bob Dylan and his
cowboy band appeals to me on a summer evening. Dylan and his cowboy
band are running the diamonds this summer it's time to pack up the
family and go to the old ball park and catch this show, it's the best
game in town! Summer...a sweet season indeed.

Review by David N. de Vries
Dylan. He sang Visions of Johanna, a song I haven't heard in concert often,
and he sang it in a new arrangement, but the words were there, sparkling
and clear. All through his set he sang with passion, as much passion as
his torn voice can muster. He is rewriting songs, again--Workingman's
Blues has at least one new verse, and he has rearranged the chorus in a
really compelling way. He even tacked on new bits to Ballad of a Thin Man.
I gather from the reviews here that he isn't 'on' every night of this
tour, though in most of the reports even those shows where he starts slow,
build. But he came out last night, like Elvis, on fire. And his band
matched him. I know many here have lamented the changing guitarists over
the last few years. But last night's ensemble playing was stunning. Denny
Freeman didn't solo in the style of other lead guitarists--not white-hot
playing mowing down everything in its way. Instead he wove beautifully
melodic lines against and within the chord structures in ways that made
many of the songs shimmer. It was a wonder to behold.

The big surprises (for me anyway - I don't know about the experts): Where
Teardrops Fall and I'll Be Your Baby Tonight. These were totally out of
the blue for me. Baby Tonight was excellent, but Teardrops was a
revelation. I never cared for the album version but this was absolutely
beautiful. It caused me to give my first scream of the night.

Review by Todd Battaglia
Dylan came close to filling this 8000 seat glorified hockey shed. It was
probably 75-80% full. Still, I wish he were playing the Landmark Theater
with it's perfect acoustics and 2200 seat intimacy. On that note,
concession stands selling alcohol is standard, but beer venders roaming
the aisles? Are we at a ball game? Where're the hot dogs and foam fingers?
4) The sound was not nearly as bad as I had anticipated. The instruments
were clear, and for the most part so was Bob's voice. If anything, his
voice was mixed a little too loud, because the only time it became unclear
was we he sang more forcefully. Overall though, not bad. I hope this was
true from others' seats as well.

Review by Peter Jerry Tenenbaum
Ani DiFranco apparently walked the picket lines with the replaced stage
hands this afternoon. She then played a blistering set. Dylan followed
with his own high powered Absolutely Sweet Marie. From there, the
majority of the offerings were different from the night before in
Toronto. If Not For You was gentle and rolling and It Takes A Lot To
Laugh was bluesy and always welcomed. Again, the acoustic set dominated.
The message to carry away is that Bob Dylan likes to play guitar and
tonight the confidence showed. Masters of War was particularly powerful.
The rock was tough as Tough Mama with Highway 61 Silvio and Like A
Rolling Stone pushed to the limit. I found only God Knows somewhat lame.
On the other hand, Zanzinger got his again with a moving Hattie Carroll.
Overall, this was a solid concert with Bob emphasizing his
professionalism and giving the audience what they came for.
