Review by Lindsay Ditchman Some great opening songs, Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat, Don't Think Twice and I'll Be Your Baby Tonight. All oldies and tremendous to hear the different mix from last night. There were probably 5 on Thursday's show that he'd played the night before, but that's fine. Again he asks "Am I too old or over the hill........." He likes the response I'm sure he gets every time he sings that just as much as the audience likes answering him. Review by Nick Miller Bob stared with a rollicking Leopard Skin followed by a personal favourite in Don't Think Twice - executed superbly. We are off to a great start and things only get better with the highlight being a superb rendition of Visions of Johanna. We also get a great Stuck inside of Mobile and a mostly different set of Modern Times songs. During Spirit on the Water my 8 year old daughter whispers "he's got the words wrong" - if only she knew how much time I'd spent discussing such things over the years! (Bob Links) |

Review by David Finn For me, a defining moment in the concert was when he started "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)"-I know the song by heart, even though I haven't even played it this year. It's one of those you never really forget. He played it perfectly, his voice so clear, that strange, youthful fire in him still burning, but in his tone there's a touch of hell-fire now, as he talks of those flesh-colored Christ’s that glow in the dark, and the people’s games, that you got to dodge. How did he write songs that stay so alive, so adaptable to the passing of time and taste, so strong? How did he make it when so many others fell along the way? "He that is not busy being born is busy dying". When Bob said that line and I closed my eyes and almost cried. Because after all these years, he still brings it all back home. When he and his band took their final bow, he simply said "Thank you Friend" and flashed a peace sign, smiling. It was quite touching, and I suddenly knew that the magic of Bob, which I discovered as a teenager in my mother's record collection, would never leave me, would always stay. And he wasn’t just this quasi-mythical entity from the 1960’s, who somehow knew the future, way back then, when he sung about “Desolation Row”, and the superhuman crew, and I was stoned and 18, and he was the starry beacon in my hazy night. No, for he was here now, vibrant and creative and alive, and my re-found clarity had not robbed Bob of his power or his hold. And yes gang, when Bob played "Tangled Up in Blue", he did the version from everybody's point of view, switching it around like a Robert Altman movie. It was that kind of a night. Transcendent, in these modern times. (Bob Links) |

Review by Peter Lalor Marianne Faithfull showed up to the Sydney show and was backstage. A rumoured appearance by the Stones never happened as the boys minus Mick were jamming at a nearby club as a warm up for tonight's club gig. Ani DiFranco was jeered and heckled for a boring 20 minute beat rant about multinationals, war, abortion etc. Bob was in perversely good spirits and while he destroyed "I'll be your baby tonight' _ there his melodies and he'll murder them if he wants to _ and did some awful piano stuff, he finally let the band take over and got it together. The version of All Along the Watchtower was blistering. Masters of War was menacing and the band attempted to help him out on vocals for Blowing in the Wind. The best material seemed to come from the last two albums. Review by Mark Ray Throughout most of the night Dylan swung his knees at the keyboard like Elvis, in one song sharply turning his head and shoulders on a beat to the people down the front right below him, presumably those fans who’ve been at most gigs this tour. His voice might have wavered on the higher notes but the current gravelly growl works brilliantly on the new songs. After all, he is a 61-year-old singing about being 61. And more power to him for doing so. (Bob Links) |

Review by Steve Crump Then "Standing in the Doorway" and it felt like we were. It was so cool and bluesy and the clouds of incense blowing around the stage made it feel like you were in a nightclub (more on this later). "Wicked Messenger" was a surprise, though I'd read the reviews. I'm not sure how to react because I love the originals from JWH so much, but Dylan really seemed to like the words to this song and gave them a new edge. "Pillbox Hat" was used again to take us to the break and I heard someone say on the way out that this was " a pretty obscure song" but his girlfriend replied "Yeah, but a pretty cool one!". It too had the audience bouncing in their seats. (Bob Links) |

Review by Steve Crump First I enjoyed it as he played most numbers I'd never heard live before including "Tonight I'll be Staying here with you" (though as the 2nd song his voice wasn't ready for this one) and a stunning "Forever Young" to finish. Intersting versions of "Shelter.." and even interesting "Silvio" though why he plays this is a mystery. "Love Sick" was spot on and one of the few songs the band sounded like it knew what it was doing... too many award instrumental sections for my liking in nearly all the songs. He was certainly fit and well, lively and purposeful on stage.. though a little posed. The audience was a 'greatest hits' group and gave the loudest cheers for "Don't Think 2" and "Blowin in ..." but the later was a pretty good version. (Bob Links) |
