Explaining the situation to Dad that although he had front he may not be front if people stand or push past suddenly Dad was up for it! If he had been given front row that was where he was going to be, on the rail. Front row but with high stage and those black boxes all across the front, sitting I could not see a lot but Dad to the side could actually see past the black box to see Bob at the keyboard whilst still seated. That was the main thing for me that Dad could see as I had seen it before and would no doubt do so again God willing and could even get a lot just from listening but was praying we would be allowed to stand. Lights out, in the darkness people scrambling up front and my Dad still in his seat, suddenly I grab his shoulder and hoist him up onto the rail beside me and the first song starts, "Cats In The Well" - Dad Is Standing At The Rail!

Being front of house tonight was not good sound wise for me but that is no loud and going straight through the middle of my skull from the mega amps right above my head. It was good to have invited a friend with me too tonight who, whilst sitting much further back, commented later how good the sound was, "just right, not overly loud" he said, to my all but deaf ears. He really loved the show, his first ever Dylan concert, did not know all the songs but was really glad to have had the experience and commented - "just no solo greats like him anymore". So there we have it, the sound was brilliant and not at all mono or going straight through the middle of the skull and even with a band Bob is seen as a solo great and obviously rightly so. My Back Pages was ticket paid for and still Nettie Moore and High Water to come. Not being a stato I do not know when we were last treated to My Back Pages but not sure I have heard it live before. How can any Dylan fan have a fouvorite but if we are allowed a list My Back Pages would be in mine as would She Belongs To Me. Bob as always gets it right with the band and playing to the crowd as must to fill these arenas. But what talent in that band that does not come through at venues like this. So glad that Donnie Herron is now so better positioned and seemingly working closer to Bob. I do not think the talents of Donnie or what he has to offer with his sound to Bob's music can fully shine at these big gigs but the little that comes through is enough. Even my friend commented later by saying what was that instrument, is it a slide guitar. Said, "don't know technical things but it was probably Donnie".

Freddy Koella. Well.... I understand why people either hate or love him and I find myself sometimes in the middle and sometimes not. His playing is very interesting. It's like subversive grammar. Like Dylan - except more technical and fluent - Koella likes to create tension building to a climax and sometimes not completely delivering. But I rather like his full stop new sentence manner. He holds out on a song and tries to pull at the structure by stretching the rhythmical sense of a song. Yes he seems to pluck one notes, but in watching how and where he does it, it makes perfect sense. He may not be Charlie sexton. But this certainly isn't the same sort of band and so I respect Koella in what he is doing and I see so does Campbell who let off grins of respect at certain points during the show..

But the real surprise of the night , for me , was Watchtower!! Yes , I know , this song has been something of a filler in live performance for longer than any of us would care to remember. And he has never , for me , captured that something extra that Jimi managed at Electric Ladyland. Well , tonight he did it!!!!! Take a bow, Charlie , you were great. But what a voice! Centrepiece of the whole night came just after , with a rendition of Not Dark Yet , which left me with a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye, and I'm proud to admit it. That hasn't happened for me at a Dylan concert for maybe 14 years. I could have gone home happy at this point, but the beat went on! Cold Irons Bound had the power of 1998s wall of sound , but with a voice that's now strong enough to ride it. It's worth mentioning at this point that the sound mix tonight was just so much better than I've encountered at any Dylan show since 1984. Somebody is finally beginning to get their act together in this department.
