Last night was my 32nd time seeing Bob Dylan. The first time I saw him was back in 1978 and over the last 11 years I try not to miss him if he is within 2 hours of the Los Angeles area. I saw him at the Santa Monica Civic on September 3rd and then last night in Santa Barbara. To say there was no comparison would be an extreme exaggeration. Bob and the boys were in absolute stunning form in Santa Barbara. This was the dream setlist played as one would hope. The highlights for me were a spot on Desolation Row followed by an emotionally moving Hard Rain. Later in the set Bob gave us I Believe in You and followed that up with It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding). The final highlight for me was Ain't Talkin'. I had never heard that played live and words can't describe how moving that performance was. Bob was truly into his music last night and the venue was absolutely perfect. I always try to catch Bob because one never knows if at some point he might become a golfer and give up the Never Ending Tour, but for the 4,500 or so fans in attendance last night we were treated to a magical performance.

Musical highlight was the radical re-arrangement of GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY. Once again, Bob has disassembled the song, put out the parts on the work table, and in the MONSTER GARAGE of his Art, put it back together into something quite interesting. Not sure I LIKED it that much, but, the thing is, it was like hearing an entire NEW song. And that, I liked very much..

I like the new stance at the end with his hands near his hips like he's going to pull out his pistols. And then the Hands up showing palms kind of a cross between an all encompassing wave and a "ive got nothin up my sleeves".

Waiting for the light to shine was an interesting, quick little ditty--with obvious relevance in the context of the present state of things in the world. Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum was a rocker, I was not looking forward to hearing this, but I was not expecting it to rock so hard live, but those thumping bass notes really get the crowd going. Next, Positively 4th Street was played real solidly, a great clean version. Moonlight worked really well. It was during Moonlight that I realized how close I was to Bob. I could see sweat dripping off his cheeks, as he moaned the lines. The song is a little sad, and for a second I thought it might have been a tear. Masters or War was fantastic,I can’t say enough. And I swear that where the lyrics go, “You hide in your mansions...” Bob instead sang, “You hide in your mountains...” as a reference to the cowardice of Osama Bin Laden. Girl of the North Country was the gem of the show in my opinion. Bob’s singing was great. The acoustic guitars really blended well togeather, weaving an intricate tapestry.
