Review by Jeff Hausler The show was great. I've been to about 6 Dylan shows over the last 30 years (1978 - Sydney Myer Music Bowl, 1998 - Mercury Lounge and RLA, 2003 - Melbourne Blues Fest and 2007 August 17 & 19 at RLA ). This is easily the second best ever (Mercury Lounge in 1998 was the greatest concert I've ever been to, ask any of the 800 soles' luckly enough to be there). Last night (and Friday night) Bob was great, he varied the set with fast and slow numbers; blues, rock, swing, blue-grass etc numbers; new and old all supported by a great band who were totally in tune with him and the audience. I won't go through the set list in detail but just some of the highlights. Firstly starting with Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat, I just love that song and a great rocking start to the night; Just Like a Woman was beautifully done and very moving; Highway 61 rocking like mad; Blind Willy and Spirt On the Water both excellent; Ain't Talkin' "just walkin' Through the world mysterious and vague" aren't we all?; Summer Days just kept building and rocking (they needed to get rid of the seats so people could dance); I Believe In You, beautiful. The encore Thunder On The Mountain and All Along The Watchtower was just fantastic. Sorry I could not help myself (talking about nearly every song) it was that good. Thanks Bob and come back soon. Review by Gabe Snyder By any standard, this was a very generous show. Over 2 hours without stopping, which is longer than any of the other Dylan shows I have seen over the last 10 or so years. What really suprised me was how busy Bob was behind the keyboards . . . . . not the tinkering that we got on the last 2 tours, but really enthusiastic and inventive playing that added hugely to (and was often the centrepoint) of the sound. Rainy Day Women and It aint Me were a great way to start . . . 2 tours ago I think he started with Rainy Day Women as well, but this version was barely identifiable, and impossible to sing along with. Tangled up in Blue was bizzarre - the order of the verses seemed a bit jumbled. The electric guitarists were playing a similar arrangement to the Jerry Garcia Band version. John Brown is not a song I am familiar with - amazing anti-war sentiments, and the words and story were really clearly conveyed by the quiet arrangement. Mesmerising! Desolation Row and Ballad of a thin Man were both brilliant, as were the 4 or so songs from Modern Times. Bob was clearly smiling, dancing with his feet in a very funny way. The weird spoken word introduction which seems to be intentionally mumbled so that all you catch is phrases "poet laureate" and "haze of substance abuse" was there! The Oscar was back - has it got its own passport? What is the theory behind that? Nothing wrong with the band . . . . if anything I would have enjoyed some longer solos from Denny Freeman, who obviously has many tricks up his sleeve. (Bob Links) |

Review by Peter Lalor Summer Days: Now, who said the best summer days jam was in nov last year? Kent or somewhere? bullshit. wait till you hear this one on the recording when it comes out. PERFECT. Blew the place apart with precision, tightness and volume. after this they stood in front of the stage for a bit. i swear, bob looked at me at this point (Bob Links) |

Review by George Massouris The Melbourne show was the best sounding Dylan show ever. In typical melbourne fashion most car parks were closed and it was a mad rush just to get into the place. Considering this venue is not noted as a concert venue the band sounded great. Ramona, Till i fell in love , Hard Rain, it aint me babe and Blind Willie Mctell were highlights. We also got rainy day and highway 61but despite recent misgivings about the songs they were performed with spirit. Heavens door and then Blowin got the crowd going mad. If anyone connected to Bob reads this please do not play this venue again. It is a barn.Thank god the new french sound system provides clear sound. The band are tight. sexton adds some nice licks . All in all a good gig but look out for the smaller shows down the road. Tamworth and Ballina are going to be magical. Oh yeah nice Aussie touch to Dont think twice (Bob Links) |

Review by Carsten Wohlfeld Can't Wait Which was finally getting really funky again. Bob's delivery was very energetic and he was putting a lot into the singing. Haven't heard him do this song so well in quite a while. He was singing it directly to a girl in the front row, maybe that's why? (Bob Links) |

Review by Carsten Wohlfeld Nowhere near as nicely done as on Wednesday but still a huge crowd pleaser of course. A couple of smiles and bows later Bob was gone and the lights came on. Approx. 110 fun minutes had passed, Tricia and I left slightly disappointed, not because the performances had been below average, but simply for the fact that after "Just Like A Woman" at 35 he only repeated songs from the show two days ago (bar "It Ain't Me Babe", which you hardly can call a "new song" or "a surprise". Anyways, it was a more than promisig start for the tour proper and if he only brings out Patti for a song tomorrow or at one of the later shows, I'll be the happiest little camper around. thanks for your time, see y'all at Flinders Park on Saturday evening! Review by Carsten Wohlfeld Dark As A Dungeon (acoustic) When I called Bill Pagel laater that night he went: "Really?". I couldn't believe it either. I can't remember if he did it at some point in the 90s or if this reaally was the first outing for the song since the Rolling Thunder Revue in 1976, but judging from the way the played it, you'd guess they do it every single night. Bob was putting *alot* into the lyrics, which I believe were delivered word-perfect. Haven't heard him sing with so much passion and energy in a while! Bucky was having a great time doing back-up vocals. Larry was supposed to join in too, but didn't do it for the first chorus. He seemed to have trouble remembering his chords and the words. Hmm, interesting. After that we got the only Bob speech apart from "thanks everybody" all night. "This was an old one, now one of my own". Or words to that effect. (Bob Links) |
