Review by Roderick Smith
An actor playing a part. It is pure charm ,old vaudeville ,Tommy
Twimble, Charlie Chaplin go around. Charlie Sexton is possessed as
knight arrant to the king with gun metal guitar and "down on the
knees"approach to chivalry. Dashing in on the tiny guy in the
black hat. Bowing and persuading, muse to muse. The old man grimaces
into a grin and back again. He saunters to the center, that chrome joy
stick trailing off in his right hand. He cups the mike, cocks his head
and sings something like "You hand in your ticket and go watch
the geek who immediately walks up to you when he hears you speak and
says How does it feel to be such a freak? And you say impossible as he
throws you a bone" Cantinflas wakes up from bad dream rubs his
eyes and sees his maker. The band masterful in creating a stage of
sound around this magic theater one act stage play. The Ballad of a
Thin Man as trunk show routine. It was here tonight!

Cold Irons Bound, Highway 61,
Beyond here, Man in me, Twiddle Dee , Honest with me rocked with a
renewed vigor and intensity not seen by me from Dylan in a long time.
Or should I say Dylan's band - Dylan is ALWAYS on (imho) - but I must
say that Leopard Skin Pill Box and Jolene had me almost in tears of
joy - it sounded so good and tight (and loud!) . I noticed that the
crowd tended towards the younger/hipper Hollywood crowd and they
FREAKIN LOVED HIM!!!!! I personally observed young guys and girls some
of which looked to be 16 years old approximately, dancing and totally
rockin out to live Dylan sounds. And they weren't there with their
parents!!! They were there with their friends. They paid their money.
To see Dylan. It amazes me how Dylan can without a word but a song ,
connect with so many different generations of listeners.

Review by Ron Wells
The first song is Gonna Change
My Way of Thinking from Slow Train Coming and this sets the tone for
the evening. This is not the same Bob Dylan Show of a year ago. He has
reinvented himself and his band yet again, and Charlie is the focal
point of this change, so a song about a rededication to the Lord
becomes just as much a song about Bobs rededication to his art,
specifically his live show.
..
Ballad of a Thin Man brings Bob front and center again, singing into
one mic while holding the another mic in his hand. He almost
pantomimes the song as he sings, You know something is happening
here, but you dont know what it is, do you Mr. Jones. Well, I
know what it is, and it is Bob Dylan not being satisfied, always
moving, always changing, always seeking something new and different in
his songs, and for this tour, he has chosen Charlie Sexton to inject
new blood, new vitality into his band. As the song continues, one
notices Bobs shadow thrown by the front stage lights against the
black curtain behind him. A mystery man. A ghostly presence. The
outline of genius..

Then came Highway 61. This was the true high point. They filled the old barn
with lots of lound sweet rock music. Denny did a great lead guitar and Bob's
vocals again were perfect. I rocked hard on this one - my poor back is feeling
it now indeed. I wanted to hear Nettie Moore and I got what I wanted. Such a
nice sad, sweet song that had everyone clapping along in a slow respectful
Cadence. I missed Working Man Blues from Monday's line up - but this was much
better..

Review
by Keith McMullen
The sound of the violin began
to soar, and Dylan's vocal stylings became more nuanced
and clear. The band began to move. The kindling began to
glow. Then after a melodious acoustic version of Girl of
the North Country, the place caught fire with High Water,
and the rest of the evening was a relentless burn. Nonstop
gooseflesh for this listener. Five of the last seven songs
were from Love and Theft, and each one was stunning,
including Mississippi as the first number of the encore.
How many sixty-something artists, in the autumn of their
careers, with a fan base built on some of the greatest
songs in history, can drive an audience into a frenzy with
a new band playing his most recent material?

Things Have Changed was deliciously ironic and
rocked a sweet groove.
Could they have transformed the venue into a dance hall it
would have been
perfect. Bob delivered the line about being in Hollywood,
when he is performing
in the heart of old Tinseltown, on Hollywood Boulevard,
celebrity-monickered
stars dotting the very sidewalk from which one enters the
theater. And yes, his
Oscar for this song was right there on a table behind him
the whole night.

After a not so memorable
"Stuck Inside Of Mobile", for me the next three
songs
ranked up there among the most enjoyable string of songs I
have seen Mr. Dylan
perform in a long time. "Man In The Long Black Coat"
was haunting. They
minimized the soloing so it was tight and compact.
"Highway 61" had a different
arrangement than the previous night and it just plain
smoked. It had purpose and
drive and it was one of the more enjoyable versions I have
ever seen. Finally,
"The Ballad Of Hollis Brown" (a first time for
me) was incredible, spooky, and
awesome. Hard to find words for that one.s.

The Pantages Theater Art Deco
jewel box encrustation was a "dazzle" in country
swing melt down. "You Ain't Going Nowhere" was
lit up like a chandelier. You
could see and feel in the
dusty squinting eyes of the Cowboy that he meant
business tonight. The man was in black and red soldier dress and so
was his
wild fiddling maiden. So no, you ain't going nowhere. Under Red Sky is always
sadly told and this night
no different. Its just the place of the telling, LA. The
show
is so fast and clean and spun in the finest silk that
he seems to vanish like a
dream. Its Bob Dylan's Stage show. You watch it as much as listen. He did
Masters of
War alright but it was not about the meaning but more
about the
"display" of that epic verse. You
"gaze" with your eyes and ears.

At 63, Dylan is the ultimate self-revisionist, always
toying with his songs and
altering his phrasing for unpredictable dips, rises and
punctuation. He spent most
of the time behind an upright piano, leaning over
into the microphone and
occasionally blowing his distinctively ragged harmonica.
The latest edition of his backing band proved adept at
roadhouse rocking,
country-tinged maneuvers and blues stylings. All the guys
were decked out in
gray suits, a contrast to Dylan's black Western wear. The
group tore it up
during the ramshackle boogie of "Highway 61 Revisited"
and later shifted
into swing mode for the jumping "Summer Days."

So ignore the posts and go see for yourself. Based on what I had read over the
years, i assumed Bob would fade tonight and I would just enjoy the band. Far
from it, it was like nights 1 & 2 were warmups for the real event tonight.
Especially on Its Allright Ma, and Tambourine Man, he precisely delivered the
goods. The opening was strong and his harp on Baby Tonight was awesome (but last
night's Moonlight harmonica was the most magic thing ever).

Review by Howard Mirowitz
Then one of the evening's highlights, for me at least: "Watching The River
Flow". This was quite simply the best rendition of this song I've ever
heard, either on albums or boots or live. Bob's voice was dead spot on, his
phrasing beautifully timed with the rolling, lurching rhythm and Tony's bass
line, and you could just barely hear the keyboard, and it's a great keyboard
song. And Larry and Charlie came up with a really intricate guitar break that
sounded like Dixieland meets The Basement Tapes. Highly entertaining! And also
dark and sinister. Something about Bob's vocal intonations, the way he wrapped
the growl in his voice around the verses -- "I ain't got too muuuch t'
saaaay" -- a rock & roll Nero playing his tune with a tight little
smile on his lips while Rome burns, only it was 2002 and it was Bali burning, or
maybe it was 9/11 and the Twin Towers collapsing, or maybe it was Baghdad next
in the sights.

His covers were sung better than any of his own songs. It's weird for so much of
his set to be songs by other artist when he has so much to offer from his own
repertoire. Still, End of the Innocence, Old Man, Mutineer and Brown Sugar were
all so well played and song that it was a real treat to hear. Brown Sugar became
a real dance number too.

"Sugar Baby" is raw and absolutely like the Tiffany crystal of ballads
on the new record. That song burns a hole in my skull. "High Water" is
more of the same thing. All this, and "Song to Woody" also? Too much
to ask. Personally my favorite new song is "Things Have Changed".
Since Dylan is so concerned with people being "honest with him," it is
on this number that I feel he's really honest with us. "I used to care, but
things have changed." He still does care about his music, though. Most of
the time.

Basically the same show as two nights ago at San Jose except for the completlly
unexpected "RESTLESS FAREWELL" dedicated to Frank Sinatra AFTER Rainy
Day Women. Bob introduced it as "We worked up something else, but decided
to play this one instead and haven't really ever done it so I hope it works"
or something like that. Anyway, it was a MOMENT!!

Review Todd Humpert
The "Tonight
Ill Be Staying Here With You" perfectly
communicated to the crowd that Bob too may have been
feeling those sentiments of longing, anticipation, and
sorrow for the finality of these historic El Rey shows. It
was every bit as expressive as the one he played on the
first night. "Cold Irons Bound" hit with equal
ferocity as the other nights. Its a tour de force that
hits you with unexpected intensity. This next one stands
out in my mind- my personal highlight. Bobs expressive
guitar work and melody during the peak of the "Under
The Red Sky" jam were unbelievable. I had seen Bob
perform this twice in the past: during the tour for the
album in 1990, and at the opening night of the three
Electric Factory shows in Philadelphia, December 15, 1995;
but neither had the sound that Bob created with this
version. Those feelings expressed during Willies set
continued throughout the evening. "Cant Wait"
is another wonderful live tune from the new album.

"My name's Sheryl. I'll be opening for Bob". And
with that Sheryl Crow is into her 45 minute set including,
"Heaven's Gate"; "Sweet Rosalin"; Hard
To Understand"; "I Can Sing My Song Again";
Everyday Is A Winding Road"; "All I Wanna
Do". A remarkably versatile band. As is she.
Harmonica. Accordian. She does her job and the audience is
clearly primmed for Bob Dylan.

I didn't have to. He does. And tonight you see him
actually consulting with the band after "Tangled Up
In Blue", , and again after "Blind Willie McTell".
Another factor may be that the brilliant new guitarist
Larry Campbell is probably still learning some of these
songs. There is no question he is being blown away onstage
when he and Bob get into things. His eyes are wide and he
gets a big grin, shaking his head. Later, when Dylan
introduces him he says.."This is not Robbie
Robertson. Somebody asked me....Oh. And this is Bucky
Baxter... the former mayor of Bloomsfield, North Virgina".

He is coaxing the sound out
of this guitar and this is also 'The Limbo Dylan' doing
the "how low can I go" routine...kinda 'The
Dylan Dance'!!!!! ); "White Dove" (this is
electric and he is doing "The Dylan Waltz"!) ;
"Blind Willie McTell" (where has this baby been
hiding for so long?) ; "'Til I Fell In Love With You"
(strategically placed as the final song...wild!) ; and
then he is back for the encores....."Highway 61
Revisited" ( this is the most amazing version!) ;
"My Back Pages" (acoustic and much more alive
and clearly touching than the recent "Bob Dylan Live
'96" EP4 release!....were the lyrics really..."I
was so fucking older then, I'm younger than that now?"
Oh. And here he is doing 'The Dylan Swagger" and then
'The Dylan Duck Walk'!); "Love Sick ( one of the most
powerful Dylan songs in some time!)

I've
never heard him talk so much. Repeatedly he said, "Thank
you everybody". He introduced the band. He said,
"I don't know if it is hot out there, but it sure is
hot up here." He gave flowers on the stage to a girl
up front. Someone up front slipped him a CD and he
graciously said thank you and took it with him in the end.
He actually was was giving "five" to some of the
audience up front and=fter some of the jams.
