Review by Ken Spencer His voice is just brilliant; hard, nasty and cutting one moment and gentlly soothing the next. The command with which he sings makes you feel like he wrote each song yesterday and he's got to get them out to the crowd NOW!!! The band are also superb: Tony Garnier and Stu Kimball are as solid as ever, Denny Freeman provides some nice, slightly understated solos which fit the songs perfectly, and Donnie Herron's contribution as multi-instrumentalist is appreciated by the crowd, though from where I was I couldn't hear it as clearly as I would have liked. Bob's keyboard wasn't very loud either, or didn't appear so from where I was, but he was obviously enjoying playing immensely! His harmonica playing was also terrific, better than I have heard it for a long time. Gold Stars must be awarded to George Recile whose drumming was absolutely spot on all night and reflected perfectly the nature of each song. Great versions of Jon Brown and Honest With Me were followed by a beautifully nostalgic North Country Fair and then a dark, brooding It's Alright, Ma. Then we were taken to a tea dance with Horizon and then to the Indi 500 with a blistering Highway 61. I swear Nettie Moore had shivers running up and down my spine, just the feel of the song, let alone the lyrics, had so much emotion packed into it. (Bob Links) |
