Mr. Tambourine Man - total thrill to hear this live... cool new
arrangement, too. Bob may have added another (lower) octave to his voice
since the last tour. Lonesome Day Blues - close to the album version, but
wow, did this rock. No need to reinvent it! Make You Feel My Love/I'll Be
Your Baby Tonight - these worked well together - romantic and delicate.
Cold Irons Bound - haunting new beat and guitar riff. It's a shame these
excellent versions don't get captured on official releases! Don't Think
Twice - always a treat to hear this. The crowd loved it. Girl of the North
Country - compelling new arrangement, with an outstanding bass/steel
guitar riff between verses. I also liked the phrasing: "If you're
trav'lin'.......... to the North Country Fair where the winds"

All in all, a fitting final chapter to a fine tour that
gave us 82 unique songs, several
surprise covers (including a surprise guest at a
Dylan show and Dylan as a surprise

Rage and more than a few new arrangements, some of them
quite drastic.

Standing in the Doorway was one that I had mentioned to
some others before the show that I was hoping to hear, and
my wish was granted by Zimmy. He's been doing a lot of
Time Out of Mind on this tour leg, and it is a great album
to pull from. I Believe in You from Slow Train Coming was
wonderful. Dylan stayed pretty faithful to the original melody, and it was really
special. Others that were great
were a rare performance of Unbelievable, a nice treat of
Man in the Long Black Coat from Oh Mercy, and rocking
versions of Hwy 61 and Summer Days. Both of these tunes
nearly brought the house down.

During the opening song Silvio I believe Bob noticed a
young couple, standing,
with the father holding his 2 year old son in his arms in
the first row. He appeared
to be making extended eye contact with the boy while
singing TD&TD, and making
funny faces to the child too. I thought to myself that he
might play Forever Young
for him. Bob then played I'll Be Your Baby Tonight! How
appropriate. Bob was
making faces at the boy, you know animated expressions,
smiling and raising his
eyebrows, eyes wide open, just like anyone would do when
playing/talking to a small
child. I almost thought he wanted to play peek-a-boo.
Really amazing. The pro
photographers were snapping photos of Bob's face
like crazy. I even let one of the
guys stand in front of me so he could capture the "smiles".
Those of us close
enough were all commenting about it. I wish I could see
the photos some day.

The highlight of the evening to me was "Just Like Tom
Thumb's Blues;" Bob apparently decided on it at the last
minute. He told each
band member what it was, and played a brief piano intro (of
sorts) to get them
started while Tony told Freddie how the song went. The first
verse, about being
lost in the rain, seemed an apt description of the scene in the
crowd. This song
usually sounds adrift to me on tapes, but tonight it found a groove and a rhythm
right away, Bob singing through the verses with little break between them while the
band played a slightly syncopated, mid tempo spooky TOOM
like arrangement. Jazz club sounding stuff again. Prior to the last
verse, Freddie took the solo, and
absolutely nailed it. Percect!

That's when things got interesting. Blame it o! n the crowd or the pounds
of smoke or just the wonderment of Bob, but I got light-headed during
Drifter's Escape and had to leave the front row to sit down. The rest of
the show was mostly electric and I heard it from the sidelines. Despite
the disappointment of not seeing Bob for the other songs, I non-the-less
enjoyed them, especially Things Have Changed and Knockin'. I can generally
do without Rainy Day Women, but the crowd loved it as they did Rolling
Stone and Watchtower, perennial favorites all. If Dogs Run Free was done
very nicely, though. I was hoping for something unexpected in the encore,
but it was rounded out with Highway 61 (wild as always) and Blowin' in the
Wind.

Review by Alicia Curtis
the show must have been great despite the unecessary yuppie enviornment
that the chastain park ampithatre provided. I realize that this is a bit
late, but i saw the dylan set as being quite bountiful despite bottles of
wine being sold to the highest bidder. the performance of highway 62 was
simply breathtaking as was the performance of not dark yet . i have to
include the fact that two concert goers decided to leave after paul simon
took the stage, saying unless it's the best acoustic performance ever i am
not gonna stick around. while bothersome those two seemed the epiphany of
the rather laid back chastain crowd, not standing for dylan as they did
through much of simon's set. the highlight of the evening for me was the
afore mentioned highway, where the master strutted and fretted through the
wonderful rendition which could rival the performances on the 66 tour. he
just simply ignored the obvious upscale night and rocked. the man focused
greatly on earlier (for dylan) material and brought out some standards and
hopefully proved himself to those many anoying people who found it
neccesary to later find their way out of their chairs for the
crowd-pleasing rolling stone but i dont think i have yet mentioned how
much i enjoyed the rendition of not fade away. while i was (as always)
hoping for one more, the band took it to another level, as opposed to the
tapes i have heard, and it was just a right and i exitedto the right
thinking what a great performance. i wish so manymore of my fellow
atlantans had been there, but i suppose the high ticket price and the
buckheadness (local slang) of the almost perfect night. it seemed
suspicious to me, as i have never been to this venue before, that none of
my dylan friends chose to attend though i did make a few new ones.
Atlanta: desperate city on the rise too fickle to appreciate the masterful
performance of a man still rolling after all these years.

Review by Trey Starke
Just finished Monday at work after a most enjoyable night on Saturday,in
Atlanta. This was my 28 show and had the pleasure of seeing him in London
at The Hammersmith Oden and The Alabama Theater in Birmingham. While not a
tribute to the past, The Alexander Arena is a great place to see a
concert. Small, great sound, etc.Alot of people around me were there is see
Joni, but like most of the reviews they all sounded the same. It was her
birthday and see only snapped at the crowd once, when she was doing her
Irish women story. She didnt have time to talk abouy it in America before
she called somene rude. Bob put on a good show and I got to hear few songs
I hadn īt heard live. No surprises he started with Gotta Serve and like
previous reviews was excellent until he tried to sing loud. The times are
a changing. He did talk, introduced the band, he did strut, even smiled. He
looked more worn than normal yet seemed happier . My review on the best
songs were. Blind Willie McTell a classic song about the south , a bluesy
song about the blues . He could sing it soft. Stone Walls and Steel Bars
was one of the best all night. Ascoustic with a great band. I agree with
Bob,one of the best he has been with lately. Like all the past reviews
Tangled up in Blue was worth the price of the ticket. I was somewhat upset
at no harp and was feeling cheated. I wish Bob would keep up the longer
rifts even if it meeans fewer songs. I thought he did a good job with
Lovesick and I know some that are reading this think i am crazy. Again ,slow
and soft .Leeopard Skin Pill Box Hat just rocked, wide open, loud and
excellent. Blowin in the Wind was a disappointment, I did not like the new
arrangement it seemed to take the rhythm from the song. Fully expecting
Forever Young, a great ending with It aint me babe, Harp, long rift with a
Friend of the Devil intro, a great way to end the night.

I grew up at the foothills of the Appalachians, so I have seen my share of
bluegrass and buckdancing but it didn't prepare me for "White Dove",
yes it slowed the pace of the show but it was alright. The techs finally
got Tony Garnier's bass on track, he had been communicating all night the
fact that he was'nt getting what he wanted but that changed dramatically
and the show took a significant upswing with "Till I Fell".
Bucky Baxter is a master of the pedal steel guitar, among other
instruments, but he is capable of evoking sounds that are ethereal, spooky
and it shows on this song. My friend said "He's making it sound like
horns". Uh, Ok, Uh,Yeah. A kick into overdrive with Hiway 61, never
ceases to amaze me.

Review by Rhett Thomas
Bob was present at sound check, though, singing his ass off. He really put
a lot of energy into it, which seems unexpected for a soundcheck. Songs
that I personally heard that were unusual were an old traditional called
"White Dove" which they did twice- one time with a powerful full
band acoustic version, the other time without Kemper in a more meditative
tone. This was a 3/4 waltz tune, very pretty. He also did "Million
Miles", even more smoky barrom blues than on the record, very
minimal. Not much later he did "Standing in the Doorway", no
singing on this one, but a very lush, quiet instrumental version. God this
song is going to be good!!!! The version of "Not Dark Yet" in
Columbus was very rushed and frantic, rough around the edges, so I've been
worried about the live display of this song. But it was perfect, even if
we were listening through a thick metal door with an air conditioning unit
buzzing in our ears. I really hope he premiers this tonight. For the
record he also did "Cold Irons Bound", "Cocaine",
"Stone Walls", "a beautiful "You're A Big Girl Now",
and "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere". He also started the soundcheck
with an indeterminate 12 bar blues tune. I wasn't there, but the witnesses
who heard it couldn't make it out. So I felt really good about the
soundcheck. For the few of us on the sidewalk behind the Roxy, it was our
own very private, very unusual show.
